Week 3

This week, I have decided to make people candles and have them tell me if they like it or not. One of the things that is very tricky is knowing how much scent to put in the candle so it isn’t to strong or weak when you are a beginner. I found when I was burning the candles, it wouldn’t be strong enough. So, I added a little more. The internet says should put 2 tsps per 4oz and I think that is a lot. So, I added a little less than what it said. These are the candles I made this week.

Week 2

This week, I have made more candles. This time, I tried to make base of the candle more levelled. Last time I made candles, I moved the container to a place where it would be safe while it had melted wax in it and accidentally made the candle base uneven, so this time, I left it where it was and didn’t touch it at all. I also learned that you aren’t supposed to stir the metered wax because it’s will create bubbles. It was very hard not to mix because the scents and colour I put into the melted wax didn’t completely blend into the wax so I had to stir it a little bit. This time while using the torch, I still burned a little bit of the wick but it was still able to stand up on its own. I think this time it went a lot better than the first time even though you might not be able to see any differences.

Week 1

This week, I have started making candles. My first attepmt went pretty well. As you can see, the wax is not completley level and has dried on the sides. I also have molds of flowers and succulents which I used to make pretty molds. I put these molds on top of the candle to make them look more aesthetic. One thing I needed to do to make the molds stick to the candle was heating up the top of the candle with a buntane torch. The first time I used it, I didnt heat it up enough so I had to do it again. I also accidentely touched the base of the candle wick with the burner and it became very flimsy. Overall, I think this candle looks very nice for my fisrt attempt.

Planning

This genius hour, I have decided to make candles. I plan to make the candles different scents and colors. I will have to buy some things because there are things that are not regular household items. Some things I will have to buy are candle wicks, candle wick stickers, and wax. I have already talked to my parents about this and they have agreed to buy it. I was also thinking to try and make color changing candles and also change the change the colour of the flame. For the presentation, I might hand out mini candles to the class and show the colour changing one. I think this project will be very fun.

Week 14- Reflection

I think I have done very well on this presentation. There was lots of planning that needed to be done and I am proud of myself for getting it done. I have reached all my goals and needed to make it harder than it was orginally. I am very proud of myself for that. I learned many new things about calligraphy and I hope to learn as much as I did for my next genius hour project.

Week 13 -Final Planning

I have almost finished all the parts of my presentation. I still need to figure out how I’m going to have enough time to do my entire presentation without going over 5 minutes. I also need to finish laminating things to pass out during my presentation. I also haven’t decided what to write for the demonstration part of my presentation. I practiced some different words and have narrowed it down too a few.

Week 12

I feel like I have accomplished my goal for calligraphy. I have learned many new things about calligraphy and I think it is very fun. I still need a little a little bit more planning for my presentation but I will be done very soon. I practiced some more calligraphy and I’m also trying to figure out what to write during my presentation.

Week 11

This week I am planning for my presentation. I think I am going to do a demonstration of me writing diffrerent things. I practiced many different words so I can show a few of them when I present. I also think I would bring some brush pens too school so everyone can try.

I tried laminating some of the calligraphy I’ve done and it looks pretty good.

Week 10

This week I have worked on finding an expert. I planned for an online meet with sharisse which went very well. She told me some tips on blending the colours together. She said to write the word with the lighter colour then add the darker color. She also said I dint have to use a brush pen for the darker color and I could just use a regular marker then blend with the lighter colour. She also said to write slower to emphasis the thickness of each line.

I also practiced where to put the lines when you outline the words.
